This fully furnished 3 bed/2 bath retreat was lovingly built in 2005, boasting a very open floor plan with vaulted ceilings. A two-story wall of windows frames the impressive Needles Mountains and Engineer Peak, allowing you to take in these incredible views from nearly every room in the house.
The antique Garland Stove, accented by a River Rock feature, is the centerpiece located between the spacious living room and dining room and keeps you warm and cozy on those cool winter nights following a great day of skiing. The circa 1894-95 wood burning stove was used as the main source of heat for the Waterflow schoolhouse near Shiprock, New Mexico. The owners purchased the stove from an antique shop along Main Avenue in downtown Durango. It was fully restored in 1998 and is an excellent source of heat.
There is ample seating in the dining room for large family gatherings, plus bonus bar stools at the nearby kitchen island. This island offers pub seating for four, a sink and prep area. The base of the island is made of natural River Rock, while the countertops are light stone colored 12” ceramic tile. The kitchen includes stainless steel Maytag and Hotpoint appliances, knotty alder cabinetry with some glass inlay and brushed nickel hardware, and a built-in wine rack.
The master bedroom, master bathroom and laundry are also located on the main floor. The master bedroom is spacious with his/her closets and a large window looking out to Engineer Peak. The master bathroom has a large glass-enclosed shower and his/her Kohler sinks laid on 6” tile with glass and stone backsplash.
The upper level has two bedrooms, full bath, and loft area. The loft looks down to the living and dining rooms and out the windows to the huge mountain views. This comfortable space works well as a reading room or home office, complete with all the necessary hook-ups for computer, fax, etc. Custom-cut wood boxes see through to the living space below. There is ample room for two desks, plenty of storage with two closets, and tons of natural light plus recessed can lighting in the vaulted ceiling. One bedroom has a picture window looking out to Engineer Peak. The second bedroom offers dual closet space and exposed beam work as an accent to the hand trowled plaster finish.
Throughout the home is 12” hand-laid ceramic stone tile floors with neutral plush carpeting in the bedrooms; pleated off-white Hunter Douglas roll-down shades; wrought iron beam features; custom lighting fixtures; knotty alder woodwork; light textured skip trowel plaster walls; baseboard heating.
To suppliment the baseboard heating, the owners installed the “green” Electric Thermal Storage system on the main and second floors. ETS heaters are 100% efficient units designed to provide low cost heat, 24-hours-a-day. By using electricity during off-peak hours (those times during the day and night when usage is lower and electricity is cheaper), ETS units provide heat at costs lower than most other energy sources. During off-peak hours, the ETS unit’s heating elements convert electricity to heat which is stored in high density ceramic bricks. The bricks are surrounded by high efficiency insulation which allows them to hold great amounts of heat for long periods of time. A fan evenly and quietly distributes the heat to your home during higher cost, on-peak hours.
There is plenty of closet space, all with auto lights, throughout the home, and the one-stall garage and unfinished basement offer ample storage space for your golf clubs, ski gear and other toys.
The Trex deck, which wraps around two sides of the home, is maintenance free and has copper post tops. What a great place to relax and take in the alpenglow while listening to the soothing nearby waterfall/stream feature!
