In 1976, Durango, unknown then to him, was thought to be just a pass-thru visit, but after spending some time there, he realized this was the place. The warmth of the community, the old western heritage, the magnificent surroundings, the great weather and clean air, and the opportunities of a growing area were all factors that helped him make up his mind. He bought property, made the move in 1978 and has never regretted it. “This is a fantastic area for the young and the young at heart.” In 1980, he became licensed as a Colorado real estate broker and opened Horizon Real Estate Brokerage (now Horizon Properties) in 1981.
Geof takes full advantage of all that the area offers. Winter finds him either skiing or carving the slopes on Durango Mountain Resort on his new-found passion, a racing board, or backcountry touring on his telemark skis. Summer and Fall recreation includes regular tennis matches, water skiing on nearby lakes, riding his horse to fly fish the rivers and high mountain lakes, or camping and elk hunting. Mountain biking and tennis help keep him in shape, as does working his acreage to keep the horses in (the elk love to knock his fences down) and the grass, flowers, and veggies coming up.
Geof raised his daughter, Alexa, here. A young adult, she now lives in the San Francisco bay area but loves to visit the Durango area to get back to the mountains or on the water with her dad.
